Metre: How many beats and of what type fit into a bar.

All music has a pulse - a steady beat that is there in the background, even when you can't hear it.
Notes (musical sounds) can last for different numbers of beats. You can have notes that last for 1, 2, 3 or 4 beats and also really fast ones that last for 1/2 or 1/4 beat.
You get different rhythms by mixing up notes that last for different numbers of beats.
